Airport Improvement Fees
St. John’s International Airport has an Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) of $15 that is built in to the price of your airline ticket. Revenues from the AIF are used to improve the infrastructure of the airport to serve you better and allow us to keep pace with the air transportation needs of our growing province. The Airport Authority is contractually obligated to only use the AIF to finance capital projects.
The AIF has already paved the way for major improvements including financing of the major expansion to the terminal building that was completed in 2002, bigger parking lots, a covered walkway to the terminal building, larger waiting areas, check-in counters, and better luggage handling systems.
In 2007, we opened our new Central De-icing Facility that will continue to increase operational efficiencies and safety and maintain our environmental integrity. A fourth bridge was also installed to allow passengers to board and exit their flights without being subject to the elements. Last year, self-service passenger check-in kiosks were installed and TVs were added to the departures lounge.
This year, a more automated parking lot system that includes a self-pay option in the terminal building and at the exit gates was installed. This is resulting in improved efficiencies and reducing the waiting time to exit the parking lots.
As we continue to grow as a region, the Airport Authority will also continue to implement improvements in consultation with our partners and stakeholders so that the airport, the “gateway to the Province”, can facilitate economic growth and conveniently serve the community into the future.
